‘APPLE PAY’ SCHEME HIJACKED BY SCAMMERS
Major genuine sales websites, such as Autotrader are being hi-jacked, with fake sales being carried out using a forged version of the real ‘Apple Pay’ on-line payment scheme.
If you attempt to purchase something, and are hooked onto by the scammers, you are unlikely to notice any difference until it comes to receiving your goods, as there will not be any. You will receive all of the expected sales confirmation e-mails as normal, but once your payment has been completed, the money will have vanished, along with the goods.
Anybody considering the purchase of any large object on-line should follow the following recommendations given by Action Fraud and the Police (taken from the Action Fraud Website):
- Meet the seller ‘face to face’ and view the vehicle before parting with any money.
- Be cautious of web links in an email. They may not direct you to the genuine website.
- Report scam advertisements to the classified advertisement websites.
- If the vehicle is below market value, consider whether this is an opportunity too good to be true!
